Hello Ms. Ritter,

I understand that there have been public events to solicit input. I also know that other Fairfax City projects the city usually reaches out to businesses impacted and their representatives. The MWRA was engaged in the I-66 discussion with the County so it was surprising the City didn’t reach out to the business impacted by these changes.

In your statement you mention “The proposed curb extensions also help move the crosswalk a little further away from the driveway,” Currently, there is no crosswalk by the pool’s exit driveway so I’m not sure how that would be moved further away. The current crosswalk is at the middle pool structure on the eastern side of Blue Coat not near the park. The decision to not have a crosswalk there was due to the cars leaving the pool potentially having issues with pedestrians. The proposed plan actually adds that crosswalk back into the concerns of those leaving the pool. Can you explain what led to the decision to add the crosswalk?

If a phone conversation about the process and the pool concerns is a better route please let me know and we can set up a time to discuss the process that has been taken.

Sincerely,
James Cecere

Hi Mr. Cecere,

Thank you for your email. The concepts for this project were developed with public input solicited through multiple events, meetings and online engagement, and as part of that process we heard from several people about the importance of the pool during the walking tour and open house, so we are certainly aware of the proximity of the pool driveway to Blue Coat Drive and of the importance of maintaining that access. One concern we heard about at this location was that there are a lot of people walking, biking, and driving to the pool in the summer, and many community members expressed a desire to improve safety where children cross the road to and from the pool, which is part of what the traffic calming is intended to do. The proposed curb extensions also help move the crosswalk a little further away from the driveway, so it does not interfere with the exit, and as the design is refined, pool access will continue to be an important consideration.

If you have additional questions, please let me know. I would also be happy to meet with you or schedule a call to discuss the project.

Thank you again,

Subject: Fair Woods Neighborway consideration of MWRA business impacts

Dear Fairfax City,
I recently watched the presentation on the Fair Woods Parkway Neighborway project at the City Council working session. As President of a business directly affected by these changes, I was distressed to see that our business needs and patrons were not included as part of the process. The traffic survey looked to be performed during our off-season hours. Given the influx of traffic and parking needs for our business season, I was hoping to see something addressed in the presentation. Specifically, the corner of Fair Woods and Blue Coat directly affect our business exit and general flow of traffic. Also, the plans have extended curbs and additional cross walks. I am concerned that may cause more issues on the people exiting our pool directly into the new cross walk. Has these impacts been incorporated into the plan as we have not been consulted in this arena. We would like the opportunity to hear how the changes will affect our business and how that is being considered.
Sincerely,
James Cecere
